  1. Charge Separation<\/strong>: Within a thunderstorm, updrafts and downdrafts of air cause the separation of electrical charges. Ice particles collide, transferring positive and negative charges, resulting in a buildup of static electricity.<\/li>
  2. Formation of a Leader<\/strong>: When the electrical potential between opposing charges becomes strong enough, a leader forms. This is a channel of ionized air that extends downward from the cloud toward the ground.<\/li>
